When Is the Best Time to Visit Zanzibar? Month-by-Month Weather and My Tips
One of the questions I'm asked most: “Which month should we come?” The good news: Zanzibar is warm all year round and the sea is swimmable in every season. But each period has its own pros and cons. As someone who lives here, let me tell you honestly.

Short answer
Zanzibar is close to the equator; the average temperature is 26–30°C (79–86°F) all year, and the sea is 25–29°C (77–84°F). A wonderful escape for anyone who wants summer in the middle of winter.
- Driest and most popular period: June – October
- Hottest period: December – February
- Long rains: March – May (heaviest in April)
- Short rains: November – early December
December – February: hot and sunny
Days are around 30–32°C (86–90°F), and the sea is warm and clear. Perfect for the beach, snorkeling and boat trips. With winter back in Türkiye, going from snowy weather to bright white sand is a special kind of joy.
The New Year period is the island's busiest and most expensive time; if you're considering those dates, book early. If you happen to coincide with the Sauti za Busara music festival, usually held in Stone Town in February, don't miss it.
The Turkish mid-term school break falls in this period too, which makes it a lovely option for families with children.
March – May: the long rains (masika)
In this period it rains more often and sometimes for hours; the heaviest month is usually April. The island turns lush green, the crowds thin out and prices drop.
Some hotels and restaurants may close during this period, and boat trips can change with the weather. If you're flexible and looking for peace and quiet, it's not a bad time; but for your first Zanzibar experience, I'd recommend another month.
June – October: cool, dry and the most popular
Days are around 26–28°C (79–82°F), humidity is low and the evenings are slightly cool. It rarely rains. To me, it's the ideal weather for exploring the island.
It's also the best time for safari in Tanzania: in the dry season the animals gather around water sources, and they're easier to spot.
July and August are busy with visitors from Europe. They coincide with Turkish summer holidays, so they suit families well too. The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) is usually held in July as well.
In Paje the wind blows strongly in this period; it's paradise for kitesurfers, while the north coast is more enjoyable if you want a calm sea.
November – early December: the short rains (vuli)
There might be a chance of rain, but the sun comes out again afterwards. The weather starts getting warmer, and the New Year crowds haven't arrived yet. It's a great time to visit.
In terms of the balance between weather and price, it's an overlooked gem; I especially love November.
Ramadan, holidays and planning your trip
During Ramadan the island is quieter; some local restaurants may be closed during the day, but hotels and tourist spots operate as normal. And at Eid, the streets come alive.
Combining Turkish public holidays with a few days off to come here is very popular. Flight prices rise quickly in these periods, so I recommend buying your ticket early.
Whichever month you come, I keep the trip's route flexible around the weather. If the dates don't suit you, I also organize private tours all year round.
